Walton Arts Center gears up for Artosphere with art gallery renovations

Banner, News — By Christopher Spencer on February 5, 2010 at 6:15 PM

The Walton Arts Center announced today through a press release that the Joy Pratt Markham Gallery – located just off the lobby in the art center’s main facility – will be renovated in preparation for the 18-day Artsophere festival.

The festival is set to begin May 13.

Renovations include the following:

  • The creation of an outdoor entrance to the Gallery through the Rosen Memorial Garden. Currently, to enter or exit the Joy Pratt Markham Gallery, visitors must enter through the main doors in the lobby.
  • Installing maple hardwood floors
  • Repainting the walls and ceiling

“We are thrilled that Artosphere is giving us this opportunity to re-conceive both our garden space and Joy Pratt Markham Gallery,” said Terri Trotter, chief operating officer for Walton Arts Center in a press release.

“By connecting the (Rose Memorial) Garden to the Gallery, we can create a whole new space for events, receptions and exhibitions, and better utilize two beautiful areas of our campus. And by adding new floor covering and paint, we can give the Gallery a fresh look that will be more appropriate for visual arts exhibitions.”

The renovations will prepare the space for a visual arts exhibition, which is still in development, titled “Beyond Sublime: Changing Nature.”

It will feature works of photography, painting, sculpture, and installation that connect viewers to the beauty and mystery of our environment in a way that challenges habitual perceptions and definitions.

Though plans are not completely finalized, Walton Arts Center intends to use sustainable building practices with the renovations, including reusing bricks from the walls and using local materials for the new floor, according to the press release.
