The reckless life and drug-fuelled death of Dash Snow | CF
Clipped Fresh — By Christopher Spencer on September 20, 2009 at 2:26 pmThe reckless life and drug-fuelled death of cult NY artist Dash Snow | Art and design | The Observer .
COMMENT: Two months after this death, The Guardian takes a deep look at Dash Snow, the latest casualty of the Dionysion artist archetype. He was born to a family of art royalty and rejected the family fortune … mostly. He is called New York’s “Downtown Baudelaire” and the jury is still out on whether his art was brilliant or self-indulgent juvenilia.
FROM THE ARTICLE: It was clear that Snow, through his wild life as much as the makeshift art he made from it, was viewed by both the coterie of cool young New Yorkers that knew him and the young wannabees who only knew of him, as a contemporary urban outlaw, a renegade, a self-styled outsider. At a cultural moment when those terms have all but lost their currency, Snow insisted on their continued importance, drawing on an “outsider” lineage that harked back to punk, the Beats, and beyond.
