“Never pick a fight with someone who buys ink by the barrel” – newspaper adage

Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

“A handful of air”

COMMENT: The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette does not like President Obama’s health care reforms because it’s not clearly laid out. Instead, it’s like a handful of air, the paper says. For more Demozette venom, especially how Obama is a Chicago political boss with enforcers who coerce people to see things his way, read the editorial.

The Morning News of Northwest Arkansas

“Congress may miss deadline”

COMMENT: The Morning News asks in this editorial if the heel-dragging by Blue Dog Democrats, notably U.S. Rep Mike Ross will delay and perhaps doom President Obama’s call for health care reform. The deadline looms in August and no consensus yet exists, the paper says.

The Northwest Arkansas Times

“A seminal moment: UA right to mark commentary that led to Razorback mascot”

COMMENT: The Northwest Arkansas Times says it is good that the University of Arkansas this week recognized the famous speech from 1909 coach Hugo Bezdek delivered on Dickson Street.

As we’ll no doubt get tired of hearing about over the next “year of the Razorback,” Bezdek said his Arkansas Cardinals had played like a “wild band of razorback hogs.” The phrase inspired the student body, which chose to adopt the aggressive animal as its mascot soon thereafter.

A plaque was dedicated to and plans were announced for a year-long series of celebrations at the university’s sporting events.

We should be proud of our unique mascot, the paper contends. No argument here.

Ink by the Byte is an ‘almost daily’ media criticism and editorial roundup column focused on three newspapers in Northwest Arkansas, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, the Morning News of Northwest Arkansas and the Northwest Arkansas Times. All comments reflect the opinion of Christopher Spencer, publisher of Ozarks Unbound.
