(This week’s Songbook is provided by Fayetteville artist Megan Chapman who works, creates and plays in the Fayetteville Underground. You can see some of her work at meganchapman.com or follow her writing at Megan Chapman’s Studio Blog.)

A wall of pulsing noise comes on and the drums just pounce, and I know I am in for something special.

Paul Banks voice smoothly takes center stage along with the driving beat…

This song is a painting anthem for me. This is how I warm up and dive in. It is loud and forceful enough to quiet the noise in my head and helps me to forget the world.

Interpol is my “go to” music for painting. The lyrics are just abstract enough that they could mean almost anything while hinting at passionate and sometimes damaged relationships. They bring a type of new romanticism to my world. Bits and pieces of lyrics and titles have made their way into my paintings over the years. Their first Album, Turn on the Bright Lights is my favorite, then Antics, and then Our Love To Admire. While Our Love to Admire was a bit of a slow grower it did afford me the opportunity to see Interpol 4 times during 2007, meet the band and shake off the dull sleep of adulthood for a while longer. I highly recommend all of their music.
