Maxed Out and the end of time: Daily Do’s for Thursday, February 18, 2010

Banner, Daily Crier — By Christopher Spencer on February 18, 2010 at 11:46 am

Oh Kali, you crazy death-bringing goddess, you.

Fun fact: The period of history which ultimately results in the destruction of the world, known as the Kali Yuga or “Age of Kali,” started on this date back in 3102 BC.

This, according to the Surya Siddhanta of Hindu theology. Your mileage may vary.

The good news is that after this slow, steep 432,000-year decline of the universe, things will be renewed and we get to do it all over again.

This is very much like my love/hate relationship with housework.

Check out these world-affirming events today:

  • NWA Happy Hour is holding a social starting at 5 p.m. tonight at Savor, 2217 N. College Ave. Apparently, this week you get $2 off mixed drinks, $2 drafts and $5 martinis in what’s been called one of the nicest lounges in Northwest Arkansas.
  • CCOA and Legal Aid of Arkansas, together with Americans for Fairness in Lending, are joining forces to provide a free screening of the eye-opening credit card expose called Maxed Out at 5:30 p.m. tonight at the Fayetteville Public Library. I watched this movie on Netflix’s Watch Instantly several months ago and found myself angry when I thought back to the predatory credit card companies on the Hendrix campus back in the early- to mid-90s. And they were with full permission of the university. It’s a must-see movie.

  • Joining Effron White in this month’s Song in the ‘Ville Songwriters In-the-Round series are 3 talented singer-songwriters from the ol’ hometown: Mike Bewley, Carter Sampson, and Candy Lee. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. at the UARK Ballroom, 644 W. Dickson St.
  • They will rock you. Gary Mullens channels the late Frankie Mercury to bring One Night of Queen to the Walton Arts Center. The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets range from $20.50 to $60.50.
