Hello Northwest Arkansas Women’s Shelter Friends,

A year ago, Mark Horvath, founder of InvisiblePeople.tv, visited NWA to raise awareness about homelessness in our region. It was a rally called “1,287″ to represent the number of homeless counted in the Point in Time survey done by the University of Arkansas in early 2009.

In the year since then, many positive changes have developed in our region.

Please join us Saturday, July 31 at 6:00 at the UA Global Campus auditorium in downtown Fayetteville to see Mark again and find out what’s been happening since his last visit.

The evening’s events will include a panel of homeless talking about their experience, but also a panel discussion of several agencies, including NWAWS and yours truly. Mark himself is a passionate speaker and a knowledgeable advocate for the homeless in our country.

Our organization, NWAWS, has partnered over the last year with 7 Hills, Samaritan Community Center, Cobblestone Project, and the U of A to address the needs of the homeless, but for our agency, the specific needs of victims of domestic violence who need affordable housing solutions.

One of the important discoveries we’ve made in the past year is that many of our homeless, even in NWA, are victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Some become victims as a result of homelessness, but many were victims of violence first and chose homelessness over the violence. What a terrible choice to have to make. Many studies and research projects also illustrate that this is the case nation-wide.

The event will last only until 7:30. At a minimum, you’ll lose only a little bit of your time. At the most, you will be enlightened and moved by the stories and the hard work of many people in your community.

Angie Albright, Executive Director
