Lyndon B. Johnson creates Medicare and the Old 97′s at George’s | OU’s Weekend Crier for July 30 – Aug. 1, 2010
Banner, Daily Crier — By Christopher Spencer on July 30, 2010 at 4:14 pm
Forty-five years ago today, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law The Social Security Act of 1965.
That law provides medical coverage to all Americans who are age 65 and older.
The program is now widely accepted as a societal good, but President Ronald Reagan – a member of Operation Coffee Cup – before Social Security’s passage said: “[I]f you don’t [stop Medicare] and I don’t do it, one of these days you and I are going to spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it once was like in America when men were free.”
Well, I was born in 1975 and feel pretty free. In fact, I feel more free now to try and run my own business after the latest health care reforms that make a government-run insurance option available.
But let us not sour this weekend with talk of politics.
Instead, let’s focus on these awesome events:
