(This Songbook entry was submitted by Heather Kendrick-Gerlaugh, Ozark Unbound’s resident advice guru-ess, graphic designer and mommy blogger extraordinaire.)

When my daughter was about a year old, I somehow lost my mind completely and decided I wanted to move into a house and completely remodel it in less than a month, by myself mostly. I’m really not sure where I went wrong, but it was a very long month. By the second week, I started seeing a bit of potential, kitchen cabinets lying about and paint covering my arms and legs … I was sort of, almost motivated to finish this ridiculous project.

I’d walk in the house every evening, tired from playing with my daughter and working all day, open up a package of M&Ms, and turn on my stereo. I had the same Black Keys CD in there for weeks. I would listen to it on repeat and sing loudly. It’s a wonder my neighbors didn’t hate me by the time I moved in.

My friend Meredith introduced me to the Black Keys. When I saw Black Snake Moan (one of my favorite movies) the first time, I recognized them immediately. Soulful and sexy, this music hits me hard.

Rubber Factory is still my favorite Black Keys album, ‘When the Lights Go Out’ starts it right and I can’t help but shake my hips to ‘Girl Is On My Mind’ but “The Lengths” is my favorite. I’m not sure I could ever get tired of hearing it.
