Farewell, Nomkhubulwane. Thanks for coming to Fayetteville
Banner, News — By Christopher Spencer on May 25, 2010 at 2:56 amThe life-sized female elephant whose taken a majestic perch on the Fayetteville city square is leaving soon.
In fact, the city is holding a going away party from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Fayetteville Town Center for the recycled pachyderm.
For six weeks, Nomkhubulwane delighted residents and visitors alike and reminded them of our obligation to be stewards of this planet’s resources.
I filmed the interview above with Bliss Brown just after the second Fayetteville Forward session on April 17. Brown led that day’s events and was also instrumental in bringing the elephant to Fayetteville.
She is friends with the artist, South African Andries Botha.
She spoke about the importance of the elephant as a symbol, both in Africa and internationally.
It’s thought that elephants were among the species that early man followed out of Africa. In that same way, Brown said Botha hopes his art will lead humans into a new way of interacting with their resources.
Fare thee well, Nomkhubulwane.

I’m happy to have the Oxford American Dictionary on my computer so that I can look up words like, pachyderm….:)
*grins* I had to go looking for some other words for elephant. There aren’t enough out there.
