Charge of the Blanket, err Snuggie, Brigade today on Dickson Street

Banner, Opinion — By Christopher Spencer on January 22, 2010 at 12:32 pm

By Christopher Spencer

I remember the first time I saw the famed Snuggie infomercial on television more than a year ago.

I laughed and thought little about it, except that it might be part of a world-wide conspiracy to make us look like wizards or druids. Then, I saw a friend on Facebook had linked to the TV commercial.

That post gathered a ton of comments, mostly disdainful but humorous about this new blanket 2.0 product.

In the time that has passed, this backward robe has run roughshod over the pop culture landscape, often with an ironic wink about its silliness.

Flash forward to today and what is being billed as Fayetteville’s “1st Annual” Dickson Street Snuggie Crawl is full-effect.

It started as a pub crawl idea – a national phenomenon apparently, according to snuggiepubcrawl, com – but then took on a more family-friendly sheen as more local businesses on Dickson Street became involved.

The idea to have an event like this in Fayetteville is only about two weeks old, said Kelly Zega, one of the event organizers. It grew out of a comment she made on Facebook after her husband, Steve Zega, a Washington County Quorum Court member and candidate for circuit judge, received a Razorback Snuggie as a “dirty santa” gift for Christmas.

Zega’s comment drew 40 responses.

She said this sort of event is perfect for Fayetteville. It blends a little economic development for Dickson Street with a strong dose of humor – something much needed after a tough financial year.

“Fayetteville is just ripe for that type of activity. We have a since of humor about ourselves,” she said.

Zega will be sporting a Snuggie of her own creation and encourages others to feel free to decorate or craft their own.

Check a look at discounts being offered by local merchants if you come donning a Snuggie.
