‘Bruno’s Ft. Smith: Staged homophobia or accurate depiction?

COMMENT: Newsweek raises an interesting question by tracing out the many steps the production crew for ‘Bruno’ took to whip up the crowd in Ft. Smith into a homophobic frenzy. I mean, they really orchestrated the crowd to get them to a fevered pitch by distributing t-shirts with homophobic slogans and subsidizing beers all night long for $1 but telling the crowd that the sale would end soon. I have no doubt that such sentiment exists in Ft. Smith, but is it fair to manipulate the situation so deeply and not tell the movie audience that it’s being done.
