Asking Abel for Answers | Five Questions with Abel Tomlinson, Candidate for House District 92Banner, Five Questions — By Christopher Spencer on August 4, 2010 at 12:00 am
We were intently interested when Abel Tomlinson announced his intentions to run for the State House District 92 seat last month.
Just two years ago, Tomlinson was a Green Party candidate who took 21 percent of the vote from incumbent Republican Congressman John Boozman for the 3rd U.S. Congressional District that covers Northwest Arkansas.
But this year, Tomlinson had some trouble with the police over psychedelic mushrooms and in April staged a protest against the drug war at the Washington County Courthouse from atop a tree.
We caught up with Abel this week and asked him what’s happening with his independent, write-in candidacy, the tree incident and what mushrooms can teach the human race.
Abel, WTF? Why are you running against Greg Leding, former Ozarks Unbound publisher, for the District 92 seat?
I am not running against Greg Leding. I am running with him. I respect Greg and my entrance has very little to do with him, but I was extremely disappointed to find that he towed the poisonous party line & endorsed that Republican Blanche Lincoln for U.S. Senate. This is a woman who voted with Bush & Boozman for multi-trillion dollar oil wars, multiple tax cuts for the superrich, massive Wall St. bailouts, and much more corporate fascist policies, all of which have exploded our national debt.
The fact that political parties push candidates to support people or policies they would not independently endorse is another reason I am running as an independent. I would never endorse anyone I did not support, it is counter to my integrity.
The reason I am running is because I am divinely inspired to be a life-long advocate for peace. We are engaged in various wars around the world and at home, and my goal is to end them all. A great many wars, including our Middle East oil/Wall St./Israel wars, are caused in large part by a fascist concentration of power in the hands of a few thousand corporate owners that finance our elections and control our media monopolies.
I believe the most powerful single thing that could be done to restore democracy in the American government and bring world peace would be to Repeal Corporate Personhood. This powerful step could also help solve a thousand of our other problems, including the dumping of trillions of gallons of toxic industrial waste into our precious waters & children’s bodies, which would address the insane fact that over 1 in 3 Americans die of cancer.
OK, so there are some issues you feel need to be part of the electoral conversation? You’ve mentioned revoking corporate personhood, for example. Can you take us through your platform as in an independent write in candidate?
I am running as a write-in candidate because it doesn’t require a $3,000 filing fee like Greg Leding’s cost. Not only do these excessive filing fees exclude the poorer majority of the public from running, but also the large costs of campaigns becomes a corrupting force for candidates and government. Candidates often sacrifice principled positions & integrity to raise large sums to win elections. National elections are won 90% of the time by the candidate with more money, which is another reason I am preaching about Repealing Corporate Personhood.
As a write-in, I will beg no one for money and will spend no one’s money but my own, which is very little.
Besides bringing international peace by Repealing Corporate Personhood, the only other issue I am running on is bringing domestic peace by Repealing the Brutal Drug War. We are wastefully spending billions of state & federal tax dollars prosecuting & imprisoning nonviolent drug offenders. This Drug War is truly a war on freedom & millions of good American citizens that simply prefer other intoxicants besides alcohol or tobacco, which are factually more dangerous and lethal than most illegal drugs, especially the innocuous Cannabis sativa plant. We could not only divert millions of wasted state drug war dollars from this lost cause to education & other smart investments, but the hemp fiber is one of the most valuable plant products known to man, and legalizing it would vastly boost the Arkansas economy.
What happened in the tree?
The Drug War was dismantling my life & destroying any hope of succeeding at the lost cause of the materialistic American Dream & I was becoming much further entrenched in a life of poverty. I was being pushed out of the U of A, despite being a near 4.0 student for 8 years of undergrad & grad school, I was being denied jobs I was extremely qualified for, I am unjustly facing a potential of 20 years in the gulag torture-prisons of America, and my lawyer was doing an extremely poor job of representing me, even making fun of my deep religious faith to the prosecutor.
The worst part of all is that this charge has led to me not being able to see or talk to my beloved daughter Anna, whom I love more than anything in the world. This pain is so severe I could never have previously comprehended it, and any who have never experienced something like that surely can’t either. Assaults like these on one’s life tend to make one stressed and temporarily act abnormal.
Although the great psychologist Carl Jung said, “Show me a sane man and I’ll cure him for you.” I truly believe that anyone that has deeply researched all religious philosophy and ventured deep within God’s interior temple, and anyone that has deeply researched the corrupt policies our corporate owners are engaged in can not maintain the lie-based materialistic image of “normality” or “sanity.” Spiritual & political enlightenment will certainly make one think, feel & act abnormal.
Also, I am someone that is driven by God’s Love that dwells within, and almost everything I do is from this calling. The tree incident was such a case. Almost everything I did was because I believe God was compelling me to do that. I was not thinking, I was knowing that was what God wanted me to do. I am not sure yet, but I think in the long-run, I will learn why God wanted me to do that and I am sure it will be meaningful.
I’ve read Terrence McKenna, America’s premier psychonaut/shaman. I enjoyed it. Tell me more about entheogens and man’s relationship with them.
I love Terrence McKenna, especially his book “The Food of the Gods.” I am in deep agreement with many of the things he has to say. The truth is that for thousands of years countless tribes of people from every continent utilized psychedelic plants and fungi as religious sacrament to communicate or be at one with God, the Great Spirit, etc. Native Americans (the original American citizens & original American religion) use/d peyote & magic mushrooms (teonanactl=the flesh of god), South Americans use/d ayahuasca, Africans use/d ibogaine, and Native Europeans (before Christian domination & sacramental persecutions) and Russians used magic mushrooms. A Hindu book as old as the Bible called the Rig Veda has an entire chapter devoted to the worship of a psychedelic called Soma, which they treat like a divine food that provides immortality, truth & light.
It is also a very, very high likelihood that the Biblical “Fruit of Knowledge” was a psychedelic mushroom. There are ancient Christian paintings (over 1,000 years old) of Eve standing next to a giant mushroom with a serpent climbing up it, and Eve is breaking off a piece of the mushroom to feed to Adam. Also, the renowned Dead Sea Scroll scholar and Harvard professor John Allegro finds that early Christianity was a mushroom cult. The Catholic Church was very successful in hiding this kind of information and persecuting, torturing & killing practitioners of sacramental religion all around the planet. I believe the reason is that primary religious experience is deeply liberating & empowering, and hierarchical churches thrive off of spiritual slavery, control & their role as middle men that require money, so they can talk to god for you.
I was a hardcore atheist before I experienced divine revelation on sacramental mushrooms, and now I am a very devout believer in a God of Love that dwells withing the hearts of every man, woman & child on the planet.
What would you like people to “get” out of your campaign for state representative even if you don’t beat Leding in November?
I am running not merely to win, but to begin a 10-year campaign to educate the public on these most important issues. I don’t measure success in dollars or single electoral victories, but in lifting public knowledge and perceptions so that they can make wiser choices about ideas, even if it is never my body that is elected.
